According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of accountants and auditors is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through the year 2014. Demand will be particularly high in the tax and health care sectors.

Accounting programs, online and offline, are typically comprised of several basic areas, including:

Contrary to popular belief, accounting is a very team-oriented profession. Consequently, excellent communication and listening skills are necessary to succeed in accounting as a career.

Other characteristics of successful accounts include high ethical standards and trustworthiness, familiarity with business and marketing principles, excellent problem-solving capabilities, ability to keep pace with and adapt to changing environments, analytical and research skills, and high organizational abilities. You should aim to show evidence for all of these compentencies in your application to any online accounting degre program.
